History

Technique

Artisans can manipulate powdered glass to produce multicolored patterns, stripes, dots, and layered decorative effects. After firing, the beads are removed from their molds, cleaned, polished, and prepared for stringing. Because much of the process is performed by hand, individual beads can show subtle variations that reveal their artisanal origin.

Materials
Glass is the defining material of Krobo beadmaking. Artisans frequently work with recycled glass from bottles, windows, and other discarded glass objects, transforming it into new beads. Finely powdered glass may also be combined in different colors to create intricate surface patterns.

Finished necklaces can incorporate beads in brilliant blue, yellow, green, red, white, black, orange, and earth tones, sometimes combined with metal components, smaller spacer beads, or other natural materials.
